MANITOWOC — Orion Energy Systems has developed a parking lot lighting system designed to take energy savings and better lighting outdoors.
The fixture boasts fluorescent lamps that reduce users' energy consumption by 50 percent or more while significantly increasing light levels in comparison to older high-intensity discharge lights commonly used today.
Orion expanded its product line to include the outdoor fixture as another substantial way to help customers save on light-related energy costs.
It is estimated that well over 20 million parking lot lights are used nationwide. According to a study conducted for the U.S. Department of Energy, only 4 percent of the parking lot lights in the U.S. are energy efficient fluorescent fixtures.
"We envision a day when load reduced in the evenings and nighttime will be deployed to power electric vehicles," Verfuerth said.
The fixture is designed to operate in extreme hot and cold conditions and will be tested later in February by Underwriters Laboratories.
Company official expect it to earn a wet location rating, similar to the rating attained by Orion's fixtures used in the brewing, beverage and food service industries.
